Block Schedule.

We have a total 43 entries turned in this year that will be screened Friday Night. We want to congratulate each and every one of you that were able to get your movie in (even if it was a little late). That alone is a feat worth savoring and worth a celebration amongst your team.

However, we are a competition… Out of 43 movies, only about 16 will be moved on to Saturday Night.

It was our biggest year yet and also our most competitive. In the end, there were 2 rounds of judging (almost 12 hours total) to watch the entries, establish the finalists, and then assign the awards. We want to send out a huge thanks to each and every one of our judges.

NOTE:

We will be starting at 6:30 SHARP and 8:30 SHARP. We have a lot of movies to get through, so please get your tickets early to avoid missing something. In the past there have been extremely long lines and we have tried to push back the start time, but it’s just not possible anymore with 43 movies to screen so please arrive early or purchase tickets in advance if you can. Box Office is open Thursday–Friday, 10am–6pm.

Launch Party and Friday Night

Doug Powell, a ten year veteran of the performing arts, got his start in the underground comedy scene of Washington DC. Doug has worked venues from the DC Improv to the Friars Club in Beverly Hills. Doug’s conversational approach to stand-up has led to his involvement in storyteller organizations such as Washington’s ‘Speakeasy’ collective. Doug has produced several live comedy albums and has been featured on Sirius XM Satellite radio.

Mikael Johnson is a writer, director, actor, improviser, and comic residing in Washington, D.C. Growing up in Middletown, Maryland, Johnson spent most of his childhood playing sports, baseball in particular. He started taking acting and improv lessons at the Maryland Ensemble Theater in Frederick, Maryland. It eventually led to him landing roles on stage and in front of the camera locally. For the past 5 years, he has called Washington DC his home, working in the comedy scene and primarily with Washington Improv Theater while also branching out to perform in shows and festivals all over the country. Most recently, his 2-person show, ShawnMikaels, took home the title of “Best Improv Troupe” at the Harrisburg Comedy Festival that showcased groups from all over the east coast. In the past couple years, he has turned his focus to writing and producing. Last year saw the debut of Johnson’s ,”The Hill“, a pardoy he wrote and directed, set in DC that spoofed young professional life in the nation’s capital. He also co-starred in “Parabnormal” the same year which was produced by Aesteros Filmworks. In 2008 he spent the summer and fall writing and producing web segments, as the sports reporter character “Majic”, for Nike 6.0 during the Mountain Dew Action Sports Tour. When he is not working on his own projects, Johnson is often coaching, teaching and or directing other individuals and groups with their own performance pieces.

Details for Teams including Criteria and "Help!"

47 Teams came out to 72 Film Fest’s 5th Annual Launch Party!

There were costumes galore: CHECK OUT PICTURES.

Team Page has been updated to include each team’s Fairy Tale and Poisoned Apple. Please check the page. If there is a mistake, let us know to correct it asap. We need all bios/pics by the time you turn your movies in.

Some details for teams.

THEME: FAIRY TALES REINVENTED

2010 is our “2nd Year of Influence”. For 2009, we asked filmmakers to be influenced by an image to create a new work. We examined the way that artists can be influenced by the world around them.

For 2010, we want to examine the way that society and artists can influence and REINVENT pre-existing works. Fairy Tales in the social consciousness of today bear little resemblance to their original form. Every few generations, societal, political and market influence have altered the stories. Our current idea of many Fairy Tales comes from Disney.

Your job is to reinvent your chosen Fairy Tale again.

Do NOT simply ADAPT a previous version.
Do NOT simply REFER to a character within a Fairy Tale.
Do NOT simply SLAP a can a paint on it and call it new.

LESS LITERAL = MORE.

REINVENT the Fairy Tale, through the prism of your generation.

For 2010 There were 2 pieces of criteria: A FAIRY TALE and a POISONED APPLE.

Our Host Doug Powell gave each team a Fairy Tale based off a number they drew from a Castle doorway. Teams also chose a POISONED APPLE that had a number that corresponded to one of these REQUIRED ELEMENTS:

POISONED APPLES

Must End Happily Ever After

A Clock Must Strike (NO ALARM CLOCKS!)

Must Include an Overturned Chair

Must Use “The Ninth of October” in Dialogue

Must Include a Stolen Kiss

Maximum Time Reduced by 30 Seconds

Character must write his/her name down.

TIME LIMITS

Pro: 6 Minutes Maximum
Amateur: 5 Minutes 30 Seconds Maximum
Student: 5 Minutes Maximum

CHALLENGE

Teams are encouraged to incorporate costumes into the reinvention of their Fairy Tale. The Challenge is optional, but all teams are eligible to win the Best Costume Award.

Do the costumes need to be representative of the original work (For instance- Same Time Period as original work?)- No. You are “Reinventing” your Fairy Tale so feel free to take liberties over time/place/costumes. A Costume is A Costume.

HELP!

A few of you have spoke up about the Fairy Tale you have chosen. ”How can I do THAT”. While some teams “lucked out” getting Fairy Tales we have all heard of, we admit there are some doozies mixed in. This is why we have stated “LESS LITERAL=MORE”. Figure out a way to boil down the essence of the story. Whether you picked Little Red Riding Hood which is easy to adapt or an obscure 16th Century Fairy Tale that you can barely pronounce, we don’t want LITERAL adaptations. There just isn’t enough TIME to literally adapt any of these. Dig and find the essence. It’s in there somewhere.

The truth is- We’re not sure yet how a reinvention of a well known Fairy Tale will play out. For instance, will the audience and judges expectations of a common Fairy Tale guide their opinion? Will the audience say “Why did they do THAT?” While it would seem to be more fun to adapt a more common tale, could the obscure ones end up having an advantage?

That’s just one of the aspects of this year’s contest that will be interesting to watch unfold.

We sorta did it last year (With Edgar Allan Poe), but why are we doing it this year with Fairy Tales and Fables?

So why did we announce the Theme early?

There are 6 reasons, but we will share 3 4 right now. (See Below)*

We encourage teams to right now (this minute!) start thinking of COSTUMES. We realize many of you may not have a seamstress, designer or wardrobe in your team. You may want to find one. Use our Facebook page if you need to.

The Launch Party is a COSTUME PARTY to celebrate our 5th Year. Come out. Dress up. Bring friends, family, loved ones, strangers you meet on the street. It’s gonna be fun. It’s open to anyone and everyone. And it’s free. We are going to have a Best Costume for individual or couple at the Launch Party. Be original. Remember the theme.

It looks cool on the poster. More people in the seats means more people to watch your awesome movies and that’s what this thing is all about right?

“Reimagining Fairy Tales: An Evening with Alice Hoffman”. In conjunction with 72 Film Fest, the C. Burr Artz Trust and Frederick Reads will host bestselling author Alice Hoffman at the Weinberg on Thursday, October 7. Many of Hoffman’s novels are critically acclaimed as reinventions of the fairy-tale genre, and several have been adapted for the big screen. Following her presentation and question & answer session, Hoffman will reveal her pick from the 72 Film Fest finalists to receive “Best Use of the Fairy Tale Theme,” the first award to be presented.

Costumes?! Are you F-ing kidding me?

Uh, Let’s not get hostile here. Costumes will be the optional CHALLENGE. It’s the biggest reason we announced it early but don’t let it be a deal breaker. Many filmmakers have moved on to the finals without partaking in the annual Challenge. Last year’s Optional Challenge was incorporating Edgar Allan Poe. Previous Years have been “Make a Difference” or shoot a scene during “In the Street”. How do the judges take the Challenges into consideration? We could give you a long winded Excel spreadsheet formula answer but essentially if there’s a tie in any of the top categories, then the one that nails the Challenge will most likely get the award.

If you are totally without the means for costumes- Use our Facebook Page to meet people!

So what does the theme “Fairy Tales and Fables Reinvented” mean exactly?

Each team will still pick their individual criteria that will in some way incorporate said theme. How? Come on now, you don’t think we’re gonna give ya everything now do ya? If you really want SOMEthing to whet your appetite: There will be more than one piece of criteria this year

Does that mean I have a month to adapt my favorite Fairy Tale and pretend to pass it off by retroactively sneaking in whatever criteria I get?

No. For one that’s unethical you sly bastard. It takes away the fun of it all. Two, it probably won’t work. This year more than any other. We can’t won’t tell you why but word of advice: Spend your time assembling your team and figuring out how to handle the added logistics a fairy tale may bring. If you have a pixie in your movie when your criteria didn’t ask for it, or say little red riding hood makes a pointless cameo, the judges are gonna kinda know.

*This is below. We have a very special announcement this year regarding one (or two) of our JUDGES. We’ll send out an email soon.
