DO I HAVE TO BE FROM MARYLAND TO PARTICIPATE?

No. If you cannot make it to the Launch Party in Frederick Maryland, you will receive your criteria online at 10pmEST on Launch Night 10.1.15 and will need to upload your film by 10pm EST Sunday Night 10.4.15.

CAN I JUST WAIT UNTIL THE LAUNCH PARTY TO REGISTER?

It is strongly advised to register before Launch, as we may have to limit participation.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL SEE MY MOVIE?

72 Film Fest is stretched out over two nights with a packed Weinberg Center hosting a mostly different audience each night.  Weinberg Center holds 1100 seats.

WHERE DO I TURN IN THE MOVIES?


Films must be turned in between 7-9 pm Sunday, Oct. 4th, at Area 31 – 31 E Patrick St Frederick, Maryland OR ONLINE. We will also take GOOGLE DRIVE, DROPBOX, COPY, and other cloud storage links. We must be able to download the link in it’s entirety by 9pm. We will accept entries for Friday Night screenings at Weinberg Center up until Monday Oct 5th 9pm, but it will be late and will not be judged.

Strong>WHAT IF I’M LATE? DO YOU ACCEPT SCREENING COPIES?

We will accept late entries/screening copies at Area 31 or online until Monday Night at 9pm (10.5.15). NOTE: Any film that is late, or has a screening copy turned in is ineligible for Audience Choice Award. It is unfair to those that turned in on time.

WHAT IS 72 FILM FEST?

A Time Based Competition where filmmaking teams have only 72 hours to write/direct/edit and score a short film based on specific criteria given out to each team. Perfect time to step up and make a movie!

SO WHAT IS THIS CONTEST EXACTLY?

On a Thursday night in October (October 1st) Filmmakers from around the region will collect at the LAUNCH PARTY at CAFE 611, eat food, partake in some drinks and mingling, listen to RAINDEER, and await MIKAEL JOHNSON and DOUG POWELL to take the stage and begin giving out criteria.

HOW ARE YOU ANY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CONTESTS LIKE THIS?

Our criteria is specific to the team.  No two filmmakers have the same criteria. Past years we’ve given two Hollywood movies to mash-up, a Science term to draw inspiration, a “fairy tales”, a polaroids, first lines of novels, and even international proverbs like “The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.”

WHY DO YOU CALL IT FILM FEST WHEN EVERYONE SHOOTS ON VIDEO?

While we have various educational backgrounds, semantics was not the concentration of any of our studies. Besides,72 Video Fest sounds stoopid.

I’M A WRITER (ACTOR/GENIUS ETC…) AND I DON’T HAVE A CAMERA BUT I REALLY WANT TO BE INVOLVED.

I’M UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE, SO CAN I STILL COMPETE?

Of course you can. All we ask is that you bring a legal guardian with you on the night of the Launch Party to sign the waiver forms on your behalf.  Make sure your parents know that movies can range the gamut from G to R. The parent or guardian must be willing to take responsibility for your team in the same way a Team Leader would.

I HEARD TEAMS GET SOME FREE TICKETS. MY TEAM IS LIKE 80 PEOPLE LARGE. HOW MANY OF THEM CAN GET IN FREE TO THE FESTIVAL?

We don’t limit team size, but like past years, we give out two 2-Day tickets per team (more if you register early). That’s a $34 buck value back at you.

 

TECHNICAL FAQ:

HOW LONG CAN MY MOVIE BE? DO CREDITS COUNT TOWARDS LENGTH

Credits do count to your total length. Your maximum time will be assigned at the Launch Party or posted online with your criteria. Please include 12 frames of black after your credits/film.

WHAT FORMS OF MEDIA DO YOU ACCEPT THE ENTRY ON?

HD or SD H264 Quicktime Mov or MP4 with AAC sound (not PCM). 720p Preferred File.

WHAT IS YOUR RULE ON RELEASES?

You need to get location, talent and music releases (see releases above). You must turn in all TALENT and MUSIC releases with your film on Sunday Night.

DO I NEED A LOCATION RELEASE FOR PUBLIC PROPERTY?

No, but you may need a permit. You are not required to turn in proof of a permit.

WHAT IS THE RULE ON COPYRIGHT?

We need you to have rights to your image and music.  We understand not all of you are able to create music for your films, but there is enough in the public domain to score your film (or you can negotiate rights from content owners).  Submit the proper releases with your film. Using copyrighted music may prevent you from being screened and judged, and will prevent you from being included in our compilation DVD available on Amazon/Wonder Book and others.

CAN I USE SPECIAL EFFECTS or STOCK FOOTAGE?

Sure. We ask that all creative elements (other than music) are created within the 72 hour period.  It’s possible to use various filters and editing tricks to get some canned VFX into your movie but no filming should be done outside of the weekend.   Stock Footage, like public domain music, is acceptable if all rights are attained and creative decisions are made within the 72 hours of the contest.

DO I REALLY HAVE TO SHOOT EVERYTHING WITHIN 72 HOURS?

Yes. Don’t sell yourself short, or try to game the system by cheating. Your reputation will be forever tarnished and “you’ll never work in this town again”, said some jerk producer somewhere, but that’s pretty much how it works here too.

DO I KEEP ALL THE RIGHTS TO MY FILM?

Of Course. The film remains your own and after screening you can do whatever you want with it.  We reserve the right to screen the version turned in at 72 Film Fest events, for promotional purposes and use it in our DVD compilation. Our agreement is above so you and your lawyer (or cousin that claims to be one because he’s seen almost every episode of Night Court) can go over it.

WHERE IS THIS THING?

Launch Party location will be at Cafe 611, 611 North Market St. Frederick Maryland 21701.   The Festival is at Weinberg Center for the Arts.

10 bucks each day. 17 bucks for both. October 9th-10th. Your ticket gets you into the screenings and the After Party.

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON WHAT NIGHT AGAIN?

Everything will screen Friday Night, with Finalists, Audience Choice, Award Ceremony and Surprises (including a short by your hosts) screening Saturday Night.

WHERE CAN I PURCHASE TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT?

The Weinberg Center Box Office is located at 20 W Patrick St Frederick MD 21701. Box Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday 10am-4pm. Saturday 10am-2pm. Also open 1 hour before every show. Call the Box Office at (301)228-2828.   Word of advice: The line can get a little very long the night of the event.   Buy early to avoid that or better yet, show up when the doors open at 5:30pm and chill with us.

WHO ARE YOU GUYS?

72 Fest is made up of filmmakers and writers, some have even participated in previous 72 Film Fests and came on board after they retired their team.  Formed in 2006, 72 Fest has the mission “To provide an outlet for the creative community by hosting challenges in the fields of filmmaking, stage, writing, and other arts.”

WHAT CAN MY MOVIE BE ABOUT?

Your team specific criteria for 2015 will be revealed at the Launch. The theme this year is “BINARY”. But the specifics of how this theme will relate to your criteria will not be revealed until the Launch Party.

WHAT STOPS PEOPLE FROM JUST ADAPTING AN ALREADY ESTABLISHED IDEA INTO A MOVIE BASED AROUND YOUR CRITERIA?

We hope that writers and filmmakers will use our festival as a tool to create NEW works, and not just a way to garner attention for a previously thought out work. Not only will passing something off as “new” forever damage your street cred, ultimately you are selling yourself short by not utilizing the energy surrounding the festival to create something new.  Make your awesome Oscar Bait of a short on your own time.  This thing’s for the brave souls.  We  have  further “Proof” elements into the mix to help prevent those teams that can’t step it up and do this thing the way it was meant to be done. (Yeah that’s right, dem iz fighting words.)
