2014: THE PRODUCER.

Behind the Camera PART TWO:
In 2012, we explored THE WRITER with the introduction of 72 Script Fest. Teams were given a script to adapt into a short film. For 2014, we are exploring THE PRODUCER.
What’s the easiest way to win over a PRODUCER? Simple, catchy, easily graspable, pitchable ideas in one line or less. Producers like to put their money into projects with a proven success. In lieu of a potential franchise (Marvel) or trend (Dystopia/Zombies etc.), the easiest way to convey the profitability of your film is to reference other successful movies, i.e. MOVIE ONE meets MOVIE TWO.

CRITERIA: You were given 2 Hollywood Movies to MASHUP into a new short film.

HOW TO ADAPT:
Boil the essence of the film down, or the essence of a famous scene from the film, or the essence of the character arc etc., combine it with the next one.
When the film is done, you should be able to PITCH it as YOUR FIRST FILM meets YOUR SECOND FILM. It should be evident to the viewer.
EXAMPLES OF WHAT NOT TO DO:
You don’t own the rights to your Hollywood movies so you obviously can’t use footage from the movies, or characters from the movies you pick. Just like if you walked into a Producer’s office and pitched Jaws meets The Godfather, you would not be able to say “Ok, Michael Corleone is on a boat, see…and there’s this giant shark…”.

NOTE: Use of copyright characters or footage from your chosen films will disqualify you from judging and we reserve the right to not screen it.

Also Naming your crew-cut character Gorrest Fump, while arguably clever the first time, will most likely not be clever after the judges/audience see three teams do it. Keep that in mind.

TIME LIMIT
Maximum Time including Credits:
Pros: 7 Minutes
Amateurs: 6 Minutes 15 Seconds.
Students: 5 Minutes 30 Seconds.

QUESTIONS: Q. CAN I JUST MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT WHATEVER AND JUST MENTION THE TITLES OF THE MOVIES OR SOMETHING LAME LIKE THAT? A: No. Q. MY CRITERIA IS REALLY HARD. I MEAN HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO MAKE SOMETHING FROM THOSE TWO MOVIES? A: You got more creativity in one of your pinkies than the rest of the teams have in their elbows. So quit your whining and go make a movie.

MOVIE ONE MEETS MOVIE TWO.
