LAUNCH

Thanks to Artomatic, Danielle’s, Church St Pub and of course Flying Dog Brewery for helping to Launch 47 Filmmaking Teams out into the world to make a movie this weekend.

Thanks to DJ Two Teks and DJ Synapsis for spinning and keeping the parties going.

CRITERIA RECAP

For the first five years we asked teams to find inspiration from and be influenced by a growing set of criteria.

Year One:  A Word or Phrase.
Year Two:  A COMPLETE Thought (Proverb)
Year Three: A New Work from the BEGINNING of a Story. (First Line of a Book)
Year Four: An Image (Polaroid)
Year Five:  A New Work From a COMPLETE Story (Fairy Tale)

For Year Six, we are asking for the competing filmmakers to find inspiration from something else entirely: EACH OTHER.  The criteria for this year consists of still images pulled from the first five years of entries.  How exactly does a team use these images: As beginning and ending frames for this year’s entries.  But there’s a catch: Each still will not only be one team’s ENDING frame, it will also be the next team’s BEGINNING frame, an on and so forth creating an abstract or direct link that will be completely defined by the 47 teams involved.

COMMUNICATION CHALLENGE.

Due to the nature of this year’s criteria there will already be a rough cohesion to Friday Night with entries possibly bleeding into each other, but the optional challenge this year is to take it a step further.  We are challenging filmmakers to COMMUNICATE with the team before and/or after them to tie in their movies.  Just how extensive the collaboration is up to the filmmaker.  It could be as simple as a reference, or teams could potentially partner up and create a longer work.  It’s up to the talented people participating to decide and it’s up to everyone involved to DEFINE how 2011 will go down.

We will post everyone’s beginning and ending images soon, but for now here’s the answer to some questions we’re getting.

Frequently Asked Questions.

What is Maximum Running Time (including all credits)
Students: 5:30
Amateurs: 6:00
Pros: 7:00

Can I have credits in my movie?
We went around on this for a while, and we each had different views.  Ultimately our desire to create something truly unique Friday Night (movies fully blending into one another) was defeated as we thought you guys should be able to thank those of you that gave 72 hours of their time via credits on the Weinberg Screen.  Please keep credits as short as you can to keep the night flowing.

How do I contact the team before/after me?
The team before and after you were standing in front and behind you while picking criteria. We made it easy for you, but people are also using the Facebook page.  We posted the screening order below if that helps.

OFFICIAL CRITERIA (From Keynote at Launch Party)

Inspiration and Influence
6 Year Cycle.

Year Six: 2011 – Inspiration from EACH OTHER.

Every team is given a beginning and ending frame to their movie, taken from stills from various 72 Film Fest entries throughout the first five years.

One Teams ending Frame is the next team’s beginning frame and so on…
Friday Night will be a grand experiment.
Exactly how well things tie together is entirely up to the filmmakers.

72 Film Fest 2011
CHALLENGE – COMMUNICATION

Communicate with the team before and/or after you.  The possibilities for collaboration are endless.

You could reference something in their movie, or maybe even go all out and combine forces to create a longer movie together.

Challenge is optional but we hope more than a few of you will attempt to do something truly unique.

Criteria – FRAMES.

Starting Frames need to be the very first shot of your movie.
Ending Frames need to be the very last shot of your movie.

Treat them like storyboards.
Do your best to recreate the camera angles, settings, characters, props etc.

Do not simply use the photograph as your “frame” or your entry will be disqualified from competition.

Feel free to send questions to staff@72fest.com

Good Luck, have fun, and we’ll see you at Turn-In Sunday Night at Cultural Arts Center.
